Information has been released regarding a recital by hichiriki player Hitomi Nakamura. “Hitomi Nakamura Recital: Journey of the Reed #7—Ethnic Hichiriki” will take place on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the Small Hall of the Suginami Public Hall. Tickets go on sale July 16.
The “hichiriki,” an instrument used in gagaku, is a wind instrument that arrived in Japan via the Silk Road over a thousand years ago. In this recital by Hitomi Nakamura, she will showcase the hichiriki’s newfound charm through a collaboration with gamelan, the traditional music of Indonesia. This ambitious program features new works commissioned from composers perfectly suited for this concert focusing on gamelan and the hichiriki: Noriko Koide, who was captivated by gamelan from an early age and studied both performance and theory in Indonesia; Yasuno Miyauchi, who has a deep interest in Asian music; and Eikichi Kiyomoto, a shamisen player and composer who has explored a wide range of musical genres, including gamelan.
