BIOGRAPHY
Natsuki Nishimoto
Piano
Japanese pianist Natsuki Nishimoto is known for combining a rich sense of color cultivated during her years in Spain with a firm grounding in the classical tradition. While rooted in classical music, her performances are distinguished by a contemporary rhythmic vitality and a natural affinity for the colors and rhythms of Latin music.
Born in Furano, Hokkaido, Nishimoto graduated from Waseda University before completing her masterʼs degree at Tokyo University of the Arts. She subsequently moved to Spain, where she earned masterʼs degrees from both the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) and the Conservatori Superior de Música de Castelló (CSMC). Based in Spain for approximately five years, she developed her distinctive musical voice through intensive study, performances, and close interaction with musicians from a wide range of backgrounds, immersing herself deeply in the musical culture of the country.
Nishimoto has received numerous prizes at international competitions, including 1st Prize at the 1st San Giovanni Teatino International Piano Competition, 2nd Prize at the 6th Campillos International Piano Competition, 2nd Prize at the Malta International Piano Competition, 3rd Prize at the 13th “Spanish Composers” International Piano Competition, 3rd Prize at the 15th José Roca International Piano Competition, and the Spanish Music Prize at the 27th Cidade de Ferrol International Piano Competition. Her interpretations of Spanish music in particular have been highly acclaimed. One Spanish musician remarked, “I have never seen a Japanese pianist perform Spanish music like this, with such genuine temperament.”
Following her return to Japan, Nishimoto gave a concert at the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo to a full audience. The Embassy later described the event as “El concierto fue todo un éxito” (“The concert was a great success”). Since then, she has continued to introduce the richness of Spanish music to audiences through performances and recordings, establishing it as one of the central pillars of her artistic career.
Nishimoto is also one of the few Japanese pianists to have had direct contact with the composer Nikolai Kapustin and to have works dedicated to her. She has devoted many years to performing and promoting his music. In 2012, Kapustin dedicated two works for piano duo to her, Three for Two, Op. 145 and Capriccio, Op. 146, which she gave the world premieres of in 2014.
In 2017, Nishimoto gave the European premiere of Kapustinʼs Piano Concerto No. 6 in Barcelona with the Barcelona Municipal Band under the direction of Salvador Brotons. The performance attracted considerable attention locally and was subsequently broadcast by Catalunya Música.
Nishimoto is equally active as a recording artist. In 2020, she released the world-premiere recording of Pascual Gimenoʼs Concert-Estudios de Ritmo, Libros 1 & 2 on ALM Records, which was selected as a semi-special recommendation by the Japanese magazine Record Geijutsu. Through the complete recording of these highly virtuosic works, with their remarkable variety of rhythms drawing on Latin and popular music, she brought wider attention to a little-known body of contemporary Spanish repertoire.
In 2021, she released 1122 ‒ Kapustin: Works for Piano Four Hands as a member of the piano duo piaNA; the album was selected as a Record Geijutsu “Tokusenban” (Editorʼs Choice). In 2023, she collaborated with pianist and writer Izumiko Aoyagi on Caprice (ALM Records), an album devoted to piano duo repertoire infused with French and Spanish influences. Nishimoto also participated in Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy, an album conceived and supervised by Aoyagi to commemorate the centenary of Debussyʼs death, which was likewise selected as a Record Geijutsu Editorʼs Choice.
Nishimoto has performed in more than ten countries, including Japan and Spain, appearing at international festivals and major concert venues, particularly in Spain. As a soloist, she has collaborated with orchestras in Japan and abroad, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Osaka Symphony Orchestra, and Barcelona Municipal Band.
She has been invited to perform and teach at festivals including the Pacific Music Festival (PMF) in Sapporo, Piano Pic and Piano à Castelnaudary in France, and Pòdium Matadepera and the World Music Connection Festival in Spain. In 2018 and 2019, she appeared as a pianist in Mitsubachi to Enrai ‒ Reading Orchestra Concert, a stage production based on Riku Ondaʼs acclaimed novel Honeybees and Distant Thunder, with music directed by Akira Senju.
Her media appearances include NHK-FMʼs Recital Passio and NHK Sapporoʼs Hot News, as well as various television and radio programs. Her wide-ranging career encompasses solo recitals, chamber music, concerto performances, recordings, and stage productions.
With Spanish music and the works of Nikolai Kapustin at the heart of her repertoire, Nishimoto continues to explore lesser-known works and expand the boundaries of the classical repertoire. Bridging the traditions of classical music with the rhythms and colors of the present day, she brings a distinctive musical voice to audiences in Japan and internationally.
